pantone 2023 colour of the year

Today’s moodboard is inspired by Pantone’s 2023 Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta 18-1750. The Pantone Color System is a standardised colour matching system widely used around the world that often influences product development, fashion, and graphic design for the coming year. Every year Pantone selects a colour they think reflects the global culture at that moment in time, and this year they’ve realised that we all need a little bit of strength and confidence by selecting Viva Magenta as the hero hue.

I love this colour as it reminds me of visually beautiful things including bougainvillea in the Greek Islands, vivid tulips, sweets in a lolly shop and lipstick. Sitting between red and pink and a balance of warm and cool tones, Pantone say Viva Magenta “vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. It is a colour that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.”

“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known. Rooted in the primordial, Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

We’ve already seen similar colours on the runway which often indicates we’ll be seeing it in interiors next. While you may not want to paint your walls magenta, bringing a little into your everyday life with small decor accents, fashion accessories and lifestyle products can make you feel that little bit more empowered every day. Here are a few of our current fave finds.
