Outdoor living layouts

This week I’ve been helping clients choose outdoor furniture to prep their spaces for summer. Before buying outdoor furniture it’s really important to think about what you want to use the space for, different zones that you need depending on what activities are taking place, and what each outdoor area lends itself to (is it in the sun or shade?). Designing furniture layouts for outdoor rooms is a combination of creating functional, comfortable, and great looking spaces. Here are a few different layout ideas for outdoor rooms depending on the purpose and space available.

Entertainer’s lounge layout

Mimic the benefits of an indoor kitchen/living zone and create the same outside, using a built-in outdoor kitchen teamed with lounge furniture to save on travel time! Position the cooking area slightly away from seating areas but still in view, so the cook can engage with guests.

Outdoor fire layout

If you have the space and budget to create an outdoor fire then go for it - the design creates a vertical focal point and the added warmth makes the area useable all year round. Just note you’ll likely need council consent for a full-scale outdoor fireplace.

Outdoor lounge layout

If lounging is what you love, create a casual and comfortable living area outdoors with two sofas with a coffee table in between, one being a modular with a chaise on the end. Add small side tables for drinks and books, outdoor pillows, and perhaps an outdoor rug to soften the space.

Cosy casual layout

If cool and casual is your vibe, install a pergola and choose comfy outdoor chairs with footstools, a transportable firepit and hanging chairs for a guaranteed good time.

Zoned living layout

Take the same approach with your outdoor living as your indoor living - if you have sufficient space, create zones to cater to different occasions and moods. Use furniture arrangement and outdoor rugs to visually break up large spaces and create smaller zones for different activities.

Feature firepit layout

Making a cosy layout with a sofa and two chairs around a firepit creates an amazing atmosphere. Add a dining zone behind, if space allows. Incorporate a bar cart or side table for extra serving space, and consider outdoor lighting above (like string lights or pendant lamps) for evening meals.

Large lounge layout

A large outdoor area including sofas, occasional chairs, coffee tables and stools can cater to large groups and extend your living space year-round (with the help of great heating).

Balcony layout

If your outdoor space consists of a long, skinny balcony, don’t sweat it. Use the length to create lounging, conversation and dining zones on a smaller scale.

Now it’s time to get out the measuring tape, paper and pencil, and start drawing up an outdoor layout that works for your space and lifestyle. Remember to tape or pace out furniture sizes in the space before you purchase to avoid the scale or size being wrong. Happy shopping!
