To paint or not to paint

You can leave the finish of your existing vanity, but if it clashes with the theme you want investigate if it can be painted. I’ve successfully painted several vanities using Resene Smooth Surface Sealer then two coats of a chosen paint colour.

Upgrade your tapware

Old tapware instantly makes your bathroom look dated, and it’s often an easy item to swap out. You’ll need to check where the existing plumbing is located and replace your taps with a design that’s connected in the same way. I’ve gone for a brushed brass wall mounted tap and mixer set as it throws a lovely pop of light around.

Hang a mirror

I love using decorative mirrors in bathrooms to add another layer of visual detail on the wall. You can also choose a shape and frame that really reflects and enhances your design style. Europe is full of beautiful archways so we’ve chosen a brass edged mirror with an arched top for a modern classic look.

Add wall lights

Wall lights give your bathroom a more professional, designed and tailored look than downlights alone. They’re like the lashes or brows of the eye, and really help to add symmetry and balance to your entire vanity area. I love the creamy glass colour of these wall lights, and the brass accent ties in with the other accessories. Ask an electrician to find and assess a nearby power feed before you buy the lights you love!

Use decorative versions of everyday items

Display a couple of select decorative items such as to add interest and personality. You can find gorgeous decorative soap dispensers and toothbrush holders that amp up your theme instead of using plain bottles and containers. Place a decorative tray on your bathroom vanity to hold items like soap, lotion, and hand towels - just be sure to keep it clutter-free and organized.

Treat yourself to new towels

Upgrade your towel holder to match your new tap, and treat yourself to a luxe hand towel in a high thread count. I like the subtle textured pattern on this one - you can see how it takes inspiration from the travertine tile.
