Reveal / ocean escape kids bunkroom
We’re so excited to share a special corner of our Waiheke Island beach house project—a beautiful bunkroom designed just for the kids (and the lucky guests who tag along!).
With three children in the family and a steady stream of visitors, we knew early on that this room needed to be fun, functional, and full of heart. Rather than squeezing in separate beds or compromising on play space, we decided to turn the entire bedroom into a dedicated bunkroom—because what’s more exciting than a sleepover-ready space that feels like a mini holiday every night?
Cabinetry by Manolas Brothers.
We designed four bunks in a clever corner layout, which means there’s still plenty of open floor space in the centre for games, lounging, or simply spreading out after a beach day. The bunks feature shaker-style paneling, giving the room that elevated Hamptons charm while keeping things relaxed and welcoming, and running up the middle of the bunks is a central staircase with wide oak tops for little feet. This layout also allows both sides to be easily accessed, and makes the room feel more open.
Bunks painted in Resene Robin Egg Blue. Walls and Ceiling painted in Resene Merino.
The bunks are painted in the softest seafoam blue, a tone that nods to the sea just beyond the house, while also bringing a calm, fresh personality to the space. It's playful enough for now, but timeless enough to grow with the kids for years to come. To elevate the texture and give the room even more character, we added a bandsawn timber plank ceiling, painted in crisp white. The soft ripples and grain of the wood bring a tactile warmth overhead, adding just the right touch of rustic charm to balance the tailored look of the bunks.
We also paid close attention to how the room feels throughout the day. Soft, linen-toned Roman blinds offer easy light control for naps and late mornings, while blending seamlessly with the overall coastal palette. On the floor, we laid beautiful limestone interior paving tiles, chosen for their natural texture and subtle pattern that echoes the shifting sand just outside the door. The result is a grounded, beachy feel that ties the whole space together.

When it came to the styling, we couldn’t resist layering in coastal textures and patterns. The beds are dressed in seafoam blue and white check linen, paired with custom bolster cushions for a tailored finish. For practical touches, we added adjustable wall spotlights by each bed—perfect for bedtime stories, late-night chats, or quiet reading.

This bunkroom is a perfect blend of beachside magic and thoughtful detail, and we’re glad our little friends are happy with how it turned out. It’s a space built for connection, rest, and a little bit of childhood wonder—all with the sea just a short stroll away.
