Designer Insider: Plinths

As an interior designer, I’m always looking for clever ways to bring more wow factor, character and depth into a space. One of my favourite unsung heroes in design? The plinth. Whether you call it a pedestal, a column, or just a little stage for your favourite objects, plinths are a game-changer when it comes to styling interiors. Why?

The purpose of plinths

  • Plinths are incredibly versatile and can serve multiple purposes.

  • They transform bare walls into interesting focal points with little effort

  • They create focal points in small-width spaces that otherwise get forgotten about

  • They help highlight interesting pieces, making people’s eye linger when they walk past

  • These objects can be favourite items that a memory in you, making you feel good every time you glance that way

  • They add height variation to a room

  • They can be placed in groups to create one large focal point

Here’s how to use them

1. Sculptural Displays

One of the most classic uses of a plinth is to showcase sculptures or statement objects. If you have a beautiful ceramic vase or an abstract sculpture, placing it on a plinth instantly elevates its presence in the room. If you want to show off special pieces, put the plinths in busy areas like hallways or living rooms.

2. Highlighting Plants

Plants bring life to any space, and a plinth can make your greenery feel even more intentional. A tall fiddle-leaf fig or a cascading philodendron on a sleek plinth draws the eye upward, creating a striking focal point.

3. Side Tables with a Twist

A plinth can double as a side table, especially in smaller spaces. Place one beside a sofa or armchair to hold a lamp, a stack of books, or a cup of tea. Or you can place them next to seating areas or in corners, with lamps or greenery for added functionality and aesthetic appeal.

4. Entryway Elegance

Want to make a statement the moment someone walks into your home? A plinth in your entryway can set the tone. Style it with a large decorative bowl, an oversized candle, or a beautiful sculpture to give your guests an instant impression of your aesthetic.

5. Layering for Depth

Design is all about balance, and plinths help create height variation. Pairing one with a low coffee table or a floor cushion adds dimension and visual interest, making your space feel more dynamic.

Choosing the Right Plinth

Plinths come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. Here are some tips for selecting the right one:

Material Matters

Your choice of material depends on the vibe you want in your space. Plain stone lends a modern feel, marble adds a touch of sophistication, fossil limestone stone brings soft texture, wood brings warmth, acrylic provides a modern touch.

Consider your interior aesthetic

Do you want to opt for a neutral material or a bold option that gets attention? A neutral plinth blends seamlessly, while a bold colour can act as an eye-catching statement piece.

Size it Right

If the plinth is too tall, it can feel overpowering. If it’s too short, it might not make enough of an impact. Getting the scale and size right is key.

TIP: “Aim for balance in your arrangement, following the principles of visual symmetry and asymmetry. Using one or groups of odd-numbered items makes your display look more interesting. Having different heights and sizes adds depth and makes it look more three-dimensional.”

Whether you’re going for a gallery-like atmosphere or just looking to elevate your favourite pieces, plinths are a simple design tool to have in your interior arsenal. Alternatively, if you need a furniture fitout complete with perfectly sized and placed pieces, reach out to us for help here!
